The Government has taken steps to accelerate the proposed “Temple City” project, which aims to transform the area surrounding Beira Lake and the historic Gangaramaya Temple into an international tourism and cultural hub. The project was discussed at a meeting chaired by Presidential Secretary Nandika Sanath Kumanayake at the Presidential Secretariat on Tuesday (30). The Urban Development Authority (UDA), under the guidance of the Hunupitiya Gangaramaya Temple, has proposed the project to enhance the area’s tourism potential and develop it into a major cultural and visitor destination. Planned developments include the construction of a pedestrian walkway around Beira Lake, landscaping, and the expansion of tourism-friendly facilities to improve accessibility for both local and foreign visitors. During the meeting, officials reviewed the project’s plans and future implementation, with the Presidential Secretary stressing the need to strengthen coordination among government agencies to ensure its swift execution. The meeting was attended by Hunupitiya Gangaramaya Chief Incumbent Ven. Kirinde Assaji Thera, Prime Minister’s Secretary Pradeep Saputhanthri, senior government officials, UDA Chairman M.G. Hemachandra, Colombo Deputy Mayor Hemantha Kumara, representatives of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, and senior members of the security forces. (Newswire)
