Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananda Wijepala has indicated the government's readiness to support police officers facing disciplinary action when they have carried out their duties with integrity and dedication. Speaking at an event in Galgamuwa, the Minister stated that intervention measures could be implemented to assist officers in such circumstances, emphasizing the government's commitment to fairness in the police service.
While offering protection to honest officers, Minister Wijepala made clear the government maintains an uncompromising stance against misconduct within law enforcement. He stressed that deliberate bribery, corruption, and fraud would face strict consequences, signaling a dual approach of support and accountability within the force.
The Minister positioned these initiatives within a broader government agenda to strengthen institutions and reinforce the rule of law. He stated that the Police, Prisons, Attorney General's Department, and judiciary are being strengthened to ensure justice and fairness across the system. Additionally, Wijepala claimed the government has undertaken efforts to sever links between organized crime networks and political structures, alleging that corrupt connections to the drug trade are being exposed.
According to the Minister, these anti-crime efforts have resulted in the repatriation of 67 organized crime suspects to Sri Lanka, whom he identified as significant figures in drug trafficking operations. The announcements reflect the government's stated intention to balance institutional support with rigorous anti-corruption measures.
