Sri Lanka's government has announced a Rs. 44 billion allocation for the National Housing Development Programme, with plans to provide homes to 30,000 low-income families this year.
The government has committed Rs. 44 billion toward the National Housing Development Programme, according to Minister of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment Dr. Upali Pannila. The announcement was made during a ceremony in the Colombo District where a residence was handed over to a homeless family under the "Ran Vimana" housing scheme.
The initiative targets 30,000 low-income families who have lost their homes this year, Dr. Pannila stated. The programme represents a collaborative effort involving multiple government agencies, including the Ministry of Housing, Construction and Water Supply, the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, and the Ministry of Plantations and Community Infrastructure.
The Department of Samurdhi Development plans to construct over 1,000 houses as part of the broader effort, with an objective to build at least three houses in every Divisional Secretariat Division across the country. According to the Minister, the programme extends beyond simply constructing residential units. Dr. Pannila emphasised that the initiative functions as a social programme designed to strengthen family units through community engagement and support networks involving neighbours, relatives and government officials.
