The government remains committed to holding Provincial Council elections as quickly as possible, according to Cabinet Spokesman Minister Nalinda Jayatissa, who addressed the matter during a media briefing on Tuesday. The Minister's statement comes in response to recent claims by Parliamentarian Nilanthi Kottahachchi suggesting the elections would not take place.
Jayatissa clarified that the government has already allocated funds for the electoral process and is prepared to move forward once specific conditions are met. He emphasized that if Parliament enacts the required legislation and completes the delimitation process within the current year, the elections can be conducted without further delay. The government has appointed a parliamentary committee to oversee the necessary procedural steps.
The Cabinet Spokesman stressed that a proper legal framework is essential before any election can be held, underscoring the urgency for Parliament to pass the required legislation without unnecessary delays.
