The Cabinet of Ministers has formally confirmed H.C.P. Jayaweera as the permanent Director General of the Department of National Botanic Gardens, according to the Environment Ministry. Jayaweera, who holds the rank of Grade I officer within the Sri Lanka Scientific Service, initially assumed the role on a full-time acting basis following Cabinet approval on 30 December 2024.

Since her appointment on an acting basis, Jayaweera has continued her duties at the helm of the department. Her performance in the interim period led to further advancement within the civil service structure. The Public Service Commission promoted her to the Special Grade of the Sri Lanka Scientific Service, a distinction that took effect from 31 January 2026.

Environment Minister Dr. Dammika Patabendi submitted the proposal for her permanent appointment to Cabinet. The approval represents a recognition of Jayaweera's capabilities and her contributions during the nearly fourteen-month period in which she managed the department's operations on an acting capacity.
