Sri Lanka's Department of Meteorology has alerted the public to potentially dangerous heat conditions across several provinces, urging residents to take precautions against heat-related illness.

The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning that heat index levels—a measure of how hot conditions feel to the human body—may reach cautionary thresholds in several districts across the country today. The advisory identifies the Eastern Province and North Central Province as areas of concern, along with the districts of Vavuniya, Mullaitivu, and Monaragala.

The heat index combines temperature and humidity to indicate the actual thermal stress experienced by people. When this measure reaches cautionary levels, it signals an increased risk of heat-related illness among vulnerable populations.

In response to the warning, the Department of Meteorology has advised residents in affected areas to maintain proper hydration by consuming adequate water throughout the day. The public has been encouraged to seek relief by spending time in shaded or air-conditioned spaces and to minimize direct sun exposure where feasible. Regular breaks in cool environments are recommended, particularly for those engaged in outdoor activities or physical labor.
