Sri Lanka's Department of Meteorology has issued warnings for the next 36 hours, predicting significant rainfall and gusty winds affecting several regions across the island.
The Department of Meteorology released a weather alert on Friday afternoon forecasting widespread precipitation and strong winds across multiple provinces over the coming day and a half. Showers and thundershowers are anticipated to develop intermittently in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North Western provinces, as well as the districts of Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, and Matara, with cloud cover expected to persist over these areas.
The most severe rainfall is predicted to impact the Sabaragamuwa Province and the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts, where accumulations of approximately 100 millimetres are possible at certain locations. Simultaneously, strong winds ranging between 40 to 50 kilometres per hour are forecast to occur periodically across the North Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central, and North Western provinces.
Authorities have advised residents and businesses in affected areas to implement precautionary measures to reduce potential damage from the temporary but intense wind gusts and lightning strikes that may accompany the thundershowers. The public has been encouraged to secure loose objects, avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak weather conditions, and remain alert to weather updates throughout the forecast period.
