The National Water Supply and Drainage Board has suspended water services to parts of Kegalle District after heavy rains blocked intake points at two treatment facilities.
Heavy rainfall has caused significant disruptions to water supply across portions of the Kegalle District, with the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) attributing the outages to blocked water intake points. The adverse weather conditions have obstructed the intake systems serving both the Asupini Ella and Mawanella water treatment plants, preventing normal operations at these facilities.
The impact has been severe in certain areas, with water supply completely suspended in the Mawanella and Aranayake Divisional Secretariat regions. Additionally, residents living between Mawanella and Karandana Junction, as well as those along the Mawanella–Rambukkana Road, are contending with significantly reduced water pressure.
According to the NWSDB, restoration efforts cannot commence until weather conditions stabilize sufficiently. Once the weather improves, teams will work to clear the obstructed intake points and restart the treatment plants to restore normal water supply. The board has indicated that consumers should expect services to resume as soon as operational conditions allow.
