The Department of Meteorology warns of intensifying monsoon conditions bringing heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm and strong winds to multiple provinces over the coming days.

The Department of Meteorology has forecast a significant intensification of the active southwest monsoon beginning today, with rainy and windy conditions expected to strengthen across the southwestern regions of Sri Lanka over the next several days. The meteorological department anticipates persistent adverse weather patterns during this period.

Showers and thundershowers are expected to develop intermittently across the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North Western provinces, as well as in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, and Matara districts. Cloud cover is also predicted to remain extensive in these areas. In addition, isolated showers or thundershowers may occur after 2:00 p.m. in the Ampara, Batticaloa, and Monaragala districts.

Particular concern has been raised regarding potential flooding, as rainfall exceeding 100 millimeters is expected at select locations within the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, and Galle districts. Wind conditions are also a concern, with strong gusts of 40-50 kilometers per hour anticipated across the North Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central, and North Western provinces.

The Department of Meteorology has urged the public to implement necessary safety measures to mitigate risks associated with strong winds and lightning strikes that may accompany the forecast thundershowers. Residents in affected areas are advised to remain vigilant and prepare for potential weather-related disruptions.
