The Department of Meteorology has warned of significant rainfall exceeding 100 mm in several regions as the active Southwest monsoon continues to affect the island.

Sri Lanka is experiencing intensified wet and windy conditions across its southwestern regions as the Southwest monsoon remains active, according to the Department of Meteorology. The unsettled weather pattern is expected to persist through August 1st, bringing rainy conditions to multiple provinces and districts across the island.

The meteorological department has forecast heavy showers exceeding 100 mm at isolated locations, with rainfall anticipated in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces. Additionally, the districts of Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle, and Matara are expected to experience significant precipitation. Lighter showers may also develop in Matale, Anuradhapura, and Hambantota districts, though other parts of the island are expected to remain largely unaffected.

Beyond rainfall, the weather system is generating strong wind activity across much of the country. Gusts reaching 40-50 kilometers per hour are anticipated in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Northern, North-Central, and Central provinces, as well as in the Monaragala and Trincomalee districts. In contrast, residents in the remaining areas of the island can expect predominantly dry conditions during this period.
