The Department of Meteorology has issued warnings for multiple regions across Sri Lanka, forecasting heavy showers exceeding 100 mm in several areas alongside potentially damaging wind gusts.

Sri Lanka's weather authorities are warning of significant rainfall and wind conditions expected across the country on Thursday. According to the Department of Meteorology, heavy showers surpassing 100 mm are anticipated in parts of the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, and Matara districts.

Cloudier conditions will dominate the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces throughout the day. General showers and thundershowers are also expected to develop in the Ampara, Batticaloa, and Monaragala districts from mid-afternoon onwards. Residents in these areas should prepare for localized flooding and water-related hazards.

Beyond rainfall concerns, the meteorological department has flagged the risk of strong winds affecting a broader geographical area. Wind speeds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour are forecast to occur intermittently across the North-Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central, and North-Western provinces. These conditions pose risks of property damage and hazards during thunderstorm activity.

Public authorities have advised residents to implement protective measures to mitigate damage from temporary strong winds and lightning strikes associated with the approaching weather system. Citizens are encouraged to secure loose objects, avoid outdoor activities during peak storm hours, and remain vigilant for weather updates as conditions develop.
