Heavy traffic has accumulated on major expressway routes in Sri Lanka, prompting authorities to implement immediate relief measures.

Significant traffic congestion was reported on Tuesday along two of the country's primary expressway networks, affecting commuters traveling through multiple regions. According to police statements, the Dodangoda and Galanigama sections of the Southern Expressway experienced particularly heavy vehicle volumes, while congestion also developed near the Kurunegala exit on the Central Expressway.

Authorities attributed the buildup to the high volume of vehicles using the expressways to reach various destinations. In response to the immediate congestion, police indicated that an additional lane would be opened on the affected routes to improve traffic flow and reduce travel delays.

The incidents highlight ongoing capacity challenges during peak travel periods on Sri Lanka's expressway network, with authorities continuing to monitor conditions and deploy traffic management measures as needed.
