Police have arrested two Horana residents after discovering heroin concealed in rice parcels at a checkpoint on the Millaniya-Batagoda Road. The pair allegedly intended to deliver the drugs to an imprisoned relative.
Authorities have prevented what police describe as an attempted drug smuggling operation targeting Kalutara Prison following the apprehension of two suspects at a roadside checkpoint. Officers from Anguruwatota Police stopped the pair, who were travelling on a motorcycle along the Millaniya-Batagoda Road, after noticing suspicious behaviour during a routine search.
When questioned, the suspects claimed they were heading to visit a relative serving a prison sentence at Kalutara for drug-related offences. A subsequent search of the motorcycle and the individuals revealed 12,400 milligrams of heroin hidden within a small polythene packet containing chili paste. The drugs were concealed across two separate rice parcels, according to police reports.
Both suspects, identified as residents of Horana, face serious charges in relation to the incident. Police have also noted that both individuals have existing court cases pending related to previous drug offences. Authorities seized the motorcycle used in the operation along with a mobile phone belonging to the suspects as part of their investigation.
The suspects are scheduled to appear before the Horana Magistrate's Court to face charges. Anguruwatota Police have indicated that investigations into the matter remain ongoing as they work to establish the full scope of the smuggling operation and identify any other individuals potentially involved.
