A United Nations official has cautioned that the Himalayan region confronts escalating risks from glacial disasters, as the death toll from Nepal's recent glacier-triggered flood exceeds 1,000 and millions of people remain vulnerable.
The Himalayan region is experiencing intensifying threats from glacial hazards as climate change accelerates melting in the mountains, according to warnings from senior United Nations officials. Last week's catastrophic flood in Nepal, which claimed over 1,000 lives, was triggered when a glacier near Langtang Lirung mountain collapsed, unleashing a landslide and destructive flood wave down the Trishuli River. This incident has highlighted vulnerabilities that experts say will only worsen in the coming years.
Kanni Wignaraja, an assistant secretary-general at the United Nations Development Programme, emphasized that technological solutions cannot keep pace with the scale of potential disasters across these vast river systems. She noted that researchers identified 47 potentially dangerous glacial lakes across Nepal, China, and India in 2020, though the actual number is believed to be substantially higher. The population facing direct risk from these hazards numbers in the millions, according to data compiled by the UNDP and partner organizations in June.
Nepal faces particular vulnerability given its heavy reliance on glaciers for water supplies and hydroelectric power generation. The recent flood destroyed 15 major power stations under construction along with operational facilities, threatening the nation's energy security. Wignaraja indicated that while new technology could enhance resilience of electrical networks and hydropower infrastructure, the scale of the forces involved—described as a "mud and ice tidal wave"—would overwhelm most conventional protective measures.
The mounting risks stem from multiple factors beyond glacial lake outbursts. Young, tectonically active mountains in the region are more susceptible to sudden collapses triggered by seismic activity. Climate change-induced glacier melt is also loosening rocks and increasing pressure on natural barriers that hold back glacial lakes. Experts warn that many residents living along vulnerable riverbanks may lack the financial means to relocate to safer ground.
