Renovation work has commenced at Hingurakgoda railway station in Polonnaruwa District as part of a national initiative to upgrade 100 railway stations through public-private partnerships under the Clean Sri Lanka programme.
The renovation of Hingurakgoda railway station in Polonnaruwa District has begun under a nationwide programme to modernise 100 railway stations across Sri Lanka through collaborative public and private sector involvement. The project was officially launched on September 3 under the Clean Sri Lanka initiative, with Transport, Highways and Urban Development Minister Bimal Rathnayake in attendance alongside representatives from both government and commercial sectors.
Located on the Eastern railway line between Gal Oya and Polonnaruwa, the station currently operates with limited facilities and has not undergone major development for approximately 45 years. The facility serves both passenger transport and the movement of agricultural produce from the surrounding region. This is the second station in Polonnaruwa District to be renewed under the programme, following the earlier completion of work at Kaduruwela railway station.
The renovation is estimated to cost around Rs. 40 million, with funding provided by CIC Holdings PLC. According to government statements, the broader initiative aims to establish an integrated public transport system through reforms spanning short, medium and long-term horizons. Planned improvements include upgrades to physical infrastructure, introduction of modern technology and digital systems, and enhancements to both bus and railway services.
