The Court of Appeal has postponed the hearing of former Parliamentarian Hirunika Premachandra's appeal challenging her three-year prison sentence until September 23, following a High Court conviction in a 2015 abduction case.
The Court of Appeal has rescheduled the hearing of an appeal filed by former Parliamentarian Hirunika Premachandra to September 23. Premachandra is challenging a three-year rigorous imprisonment sentence handed down by the Colombo High Court on June 28, 2024.
The conviction stemmed from a 2015 incident involving the abduction, unlawful detention, and assault of a young employee at a shop in Dematagoda. Premachandra's legal team, represented by President's Counsel Shavindra Fernando, has requested the Court of Appeal to overturn both the prison sentence and an accompanying Rs. 20,000 fine imposed by the High Court.
The appeal was heard before a bench comprising Justices P. Kumaran Ratnam and Pradeep Hettiarachchi. After considering arguments from both the appellant's counsel and Deputy Solicitor General Janaka Bandara representing the respondent, the court determined to adjourn the matter to allow further time for consideration.
