The attack on a Taiwanese-owned Evergreen tanker in the Strait of Hormuz has brought shipping traffic in the key waterway to a halt.

The attack comes after a temporary ceasefire between the United States and Iran had eased shipping traffic in the region for days. The oil price plunged, but the ship's hull was slightly damaged, the shipping company said, adding that fortunately no sailors or crew were injured.

The incident prompted the United Nations to temporarily suspend a voluntary rescue operation to evacuate hundreds of ships and thousands of sailors stranded in the Gulf.

Iran has warned that it cannot guarantee the safety of ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz without its permission and coordination. In this tense environment, countries including Saudi Arabia have resumed their oil supplies due to the fall in oil prices. As a result, a few large oil tankers are still using the waterway. However, overall shipping traffic is still half of normal.
