India's Central Bureau of Investigation has filed charges against the husband and mother-in-law of 33-year-old model and actor Twisha Sharma, who died at her matrimonial home in Bhopal in May following allegations of mistreatment.
The Central Bureau of Investigation has charged lawyer Samarth Singh and his mother, retired judge Giribala Singh, with abetment to suicide and cruelty in connection with the death of 33-year-old model and actor Twisha Sharma on May 12 at their home in Bhopal. Sharma had married Singh approximately five months before her death.
According to the CBI chargesheet, investigators allege that Sharma faced repeated mental cruelty from her husband, with Giribala Singh encouraging this conduct. The agency contends that such mistreatment contributed to Sharma's decision to take her own life. Both Singh and his mother have denied the allegations against them.
Twisha Sharma's family has made additional claims regarding the circumstances of her death. They allege that tensions escalated after she became pregnant, with accusations that her husband and mother-in-law questioned the child's paternity and pressured her to terminate the pregnancy. Giribala Singh's legal representatives state that Sharma chose to have the abortion independently. Earlier family allegations of murder and dowry harassment have not been supported by CBI findings, according to Singh's lawyer.
Sharma, who was crowned Miss Pune in 2012, had worked as a model, actor, and marketing professional, appearing in advertising campaigns and a Telugu-language film. The CBI has requested permission to continue its investigation and may file additional charges if further evidence surfaces.
