The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Croci, has called for a "very robust testing and monitoring system" to ensure that Iran's nuclear program does not turn into a nuclear weapon.
Speaking at a press conference in Tokyo, he said that while Iran continues to insist that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, the international community cannot rely on mere words and that it must be allowed to conduct full inspections of its nuclear sites.
He pointed out that the inspection is essential because the main objective of the temporary ceasefire agreement reached between the United States and Iran is to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
Iran temporarily suspended cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) after airstrikes by the US and Israel last year. Although Iran has now agreed to allow inspectors back in, it has not yet allowed them to inspect the specific nuclear sites that were bombed. Meanwhile, the US and Iran have been locked in a "war of words" over the inspections. While US President Donald Trump has said that Iran has agreed to fully inspect its nuclear sites, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Qassem Garibaldi has made it clear that the UN inspections will only be allowed if the US fully lifts economic sanctions on Iran.
