The Ministry of Transport and Highways has taken new steps to strengthen the Sri Lanka Transport Board's bus service and provide modern technological facilities to passengers. Accordingly, it is planned to import 600 new buses by the end of this year.

This includes 200 luxury buses for expressway services and 400 ordinary buses for ordinary routes.

These bus fleets are expected to arrive in the country by December. Meanwhile, 104 new metro buses that have already been purchased have been dispatched.

These are expected to arrive in the country on August 15.

A card-based fare collection system will be introduced in the new metro buses.

Following the installation and testing work for this, it has been reported that these buses will be put into service from September 20.

The Ministry of Transport further stated that this move aims to ease the passenger demand on highways and ordinary roads and to modernize the Sri Lanka Transport Board's bus fleet with improved technology.
