A proposal has been presented to impose additional import duties on goods imported by the United States from 60 countries, including Sri Lanka. It is reported that this decision has been taken on the grounds of failure to prohibit and enforce the import of goods produced through forced labor. International media have reported that the US administration has presented a proposal to impose an additional tax of 10 to 12.5 percent on the said goods. Accordingly, it has been proposed to impose an additional tax of 10 percent on goods imported from some countries including Canada, Mexico, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Malaysia. In addition, a proposal has been presented to impose an additional tax of 12.5 percent on 45 more countries, including Sri Lanka. However, a special mechanism has also been proposed to allow a certain amount of clothing and fabric imports into the US market under reduced tax rates, and further details regarding this have not been released yet.
