Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has urged the government to take steps to implement Singapore-style harsh punishments against those involved in drug trafficking in Sri Lanka. He made this demand while responding to the President's speech in Parliament today (25). He pointed out that those involved in drug trafficking and criminal activities should be punished without any discrimination. Addressing Parliament, the Opposition Leader further said, "The Samagi Jana Bala Shakthi stands firm on the policy of completely eradicating drugs from the country. There is no place for anyone associated with such crimes in our party. We reject the President's claim that opposition parties are an obstacle to drug eradication efforts. Justice and the rule of law must be established to eradicate drugs." Pointing out that the current drug menace has severely affected the school system and the younger generation, Sajith Premadasa warned that while drug traffickers are arrested and imprisoned at the public's expense, they should not be allowed to continue operating their trafficking network while in prison. He further stated that it is now necessary to implement strict punishment systems like those in Singapore in Sri Lanka to prevent such drug trafficking, and that eradicating drugs is the expectation of the public and the demand of the opposition.
