Sri Lankan javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga has been crowned the world's top-ranked athlete in his discipline following his Commonwealth Games gold medal victory, and has now set his sights on winning an Olympic medal for his country.
Rumesh Tharanga has ascended to world number one in the men's javelin rankings, according to World Athletics standings, capturing the top position with 1,354 ranking points. The achievement comes shortly after the Sri Lankan athlete made history at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where he secured a gold medal in the javelin throw—the first of its kind for Sri Lanka in the event and ending a 20-year medal drought for the nation at the Commonwealth Games.
At just 27 years old, Tharanga is the youngest athlete among the world's top ten ranked javelin throwers, positioning him as both a current force and a prospect for sustained excellence. Speaking at a felicitation ceremony hosted by Cinnamon Life at City of Dreams in Colombo, the athlete revealed that reaching world number one had been a long-held aspiration. He explained that achieving an 88-metre throw at a recent competition had been instrumental in securing his ranking, and suggested that consistent Diamond League performances could allow him to maintain the position for several years.
However, Tharanga's ambitions extend beyond his current achievements. He has publicly committed to winning an Olympic gold medal for Sri Lanka, a feat the nation has never accomplished in this discipline. "My ultimate goal is an Olympic medal because Sri Lanka still does not have an Olympic gold medal. I promise that I will bring that gold medal to Sri Lanka," he stated.
Coach Tony Prasanna, who has guided Tharanga's development, characterized the athlete's rise as among the most significant moments in Sri Lankan sporting history. Prasanna noted that the achievement also reflects the emergence of world-class coaching in Sri Lanka's throwing events, with preparation for the 2028 Olympic Games already underway.
