Sri Lanka's Cabinet has greenlit a three-year maternal and early childhood nutrition initiative targeting four districts, backed by World Bank funding worth USD 2.73 million.
The Cabinet of Ministers has authorized the implementation of a Maternal and Early Childhood Nutrition Services Project spanning three years across the districts of Nuwara Eliya, Rathnapura, Polonnaruwa, and Trincomalee. The approval followed a resolution presented by the Minister of Health and Mass Media to the Cabinet.
The project will operate with financial support totaling USD 2.73 million sourced from the Social Development Fund of the World Bank Group. This external funding mechanism will enable the rollout of nutrition services targeting mothers and young children in the selected regions.
The four districts selected for the initiative represent geographically diverse areas of the island, suggesting a nationwide approach to addressing maternal and early childhood nutrition challenges. The three-year timeframe indicates a medium-term commitment to establishing sustainable nutrition services in these communities.
