Construction of a new Accident and Emergency Care Unit at Mannar District General Hospital commenced on September 16, funded by a Rs. 600 million grant from the Government of India. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake attended the ceremony and expressed gratitude to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian government for their support.

The facility is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2028 and will feature modern medical equipment and advanced treatment capabilities. According to officials, the unit aims to expand emergency and specialist healthcare services for residents of Mannar and surrounding areas, reducing the need for patients to travel to Colombo or other major cities for urgent medical attention.

President Dissanayake characterized the project as a significant step in strengthening Sri Lanka's free healthcare system at the regional level. The government has also indicated it is addressing requirements related to medical equipment, staffing and other resources needed to support the expanded facility at Mannar District General Hospital.
