India tightened their grip on the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka with a dominant display of batting on the second day at the Sinhalese Sports Club, declaring at 503 for nine after rain limited play to just 56 overs. The visitors then struck immediately, removing both Sri Lankan opening batsmen to put significant pressure on the home side as they reached the close at 8 for 2.
Dhruv Jurel's second Test century proved pivotal in India's strong position. The right-handed batter remained largely untroubled throughout his 177-ball innings, accumulating 115 runs with nine fours and two sixes. A crucial 112-run partnership between Jurel and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant for the seventh wicket fundamentally shifted momentum in India's favour after the hosts had finished day one at a relatively even 300 for 5. Pant contributed an entertaining 63 containing six fours and two sixes before being dismissed shortly after lunch, though he showed considerable courage batting despite suffering forearm injuries on the opening day that forced him to temporarily retire.
Sri Lanka's response began disastrously. Opener Lahiru Udara fell to a diving catch by Yashasvi Jaiswal at third slip before nightwatchman Prabath Jayasuriya was trapped leg before wicket off just seven deliveries, compounding the setback by reviewing unsuccessfully.
