The 49-year-old, who now leads the Jan Suraaj Party (JSP), defeated the Bharatiya Janata Party's Neeraj Kumar by a margin of 19,324 votes, securing 64,151 votes compared to Kumar's 44,827. The victory has attracted significant attention given that the BJP had controlled the seat since 1995.
Kishor's win marks a notable turnaround for both the strategist and his fledgling party. The Jan Suraaj failed to secure any seats during Bihar's 2025 assembly elections, leading many political observers to dismiss his electoral prospects. His decision to contest the Bankipur by-election was viewed as a risky gamble that ultimately succeeded. While some caution against drawing sweeping conclusions from a single by-election result, the outcome has reignited discussions about Kishor's political ambitions and the potential emergence of JSP as a significant force in Bihar politics.
Kishor's political trajectory has been unconventional. He previously managed campaigns for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 2014 breakthrough victory and later helped orchestrate electoral triumphs for opposing parties, including the JD(U)-RJD alliance in Bihar in 2015 and Mamata Banerjee's West Bengal victory in 2021. He departed the JD(U) in 2020 over disagreements regarding the Citizenship Amendment Act. Following a months-long foot march across Bihar in 2022, he established the Jan Suraaj party in 2024.
Following his victory, Kishor pledged rapid development in Bankipur and broader improvements across Bihar. He characterized the result as a message from voters regarding leadership standards in the state, while acknowledging the significance of youth concerns that emerged during recent student protests in Delhi.
