The Department of Meteorology has stated that showers or thundershowers are likely to occur in many parts of the country today (27). Frequent showers are likely in the Sabaragamuwa, Western and North-Western provinces and in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts. Showers or thundershowers are likely to occur in some places in the Uva province and in some places in the Ampara, Batticaloa and Mullaitivu districts after 2 pm. Moderately strong winds at speeds of 30 - 40 mm per hour are expected in the western slopes of the Central Highlands, the North-Central, North-Western and Southern provinces and the Trincomalee district. The public is advised to exercise caution in cases where strong winds and lightning strikes are likely. Showers or thundershowers are likely to occur in many places in the maritime areas extending from Chilaw to Colombo, Galle and Matara. Winds may blow from the south-west at a speed of 30 - 40 km per hour in the sea areas. Winds may increase to more than 50 - 60 mm per hour in the sea areas from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota. In such cases, these sea areas will be turbulent. Other sea areas surrounding the country will be moderately turbulent at times. Sea waves may rise to a height of about 2.0 - 3.0 meters in the sea areas from Chilaw to Colombo, Galle, Hambantota to Pottuvil. There is a possibility of sea waves touching the ground in the sea areas from Beruwala to Matara via Galle. The Meteorological Department has also stated that strong winds will blow during thunderstorms and that sea areas may be temporarily very turbulent during such times.
