Meta-owned Instagram has introduced a redesigned wordmark and expanded visual identity system, marking the platform's first significant branding overhaul since 2016. The refresh maintains the platform's signature script style while modernizing its appearance across multiple design elements.

Instagram has unveiled its first comprehensive brand refresh in ten years, with the company announcing changes to its iconic wordmark and broader visual identity system. Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri revealed the new design, describing it as "cleaner and more modern" while retaining references to the platform's original aesthetic. The announcement was accompanied by details about an expanded design system that extends beyond the logo itself.

The new wordmark maintains Instagram's recognizable script format but features refined letterforms and reduced flourishes. According to Jasmine Probst, director of product design at Instagram, the design team explored hundreds of directions before returning to a script-based approach. "Script reflects individuality, so referencing that felt right," Probst stated. The refreshed mark is described as bolder and simpler, with the most decorative elements concentrated on the letters 's', 'r', and 'g', while other characters have been simplified.

Beyond the wordmark, Meta's design team has introduced a broader visual system including updated typography and new typefaces called Instagram Pen and Instagram Mono. The brand's signature gradient has been retained but applied with a lighter approach. Notably, the camera icon on the app's home screen will remain unchanged. The complete rollout of these design changes will extend through 2026.

The reception to the redesign has been mixed within design and user communities. While some designers welcomed the modernization of the previous cursive style, others expressed skepticism about a wordmark that blends script and sans-serif elements. Social media comments have noted that the new 'r' resembles a 'z', with the playful alternative name "Instagzam" circulating online among users reacting to the change.
