Sri Lankan authorities have formally requested an Interpol Blue Notice against former Minister Basil Rajapaksa, who is currently outside the country. Interpol has asked for additional documentation as Sri Lanka pursues two separate arrest warrants against him.

Sri Lankan authorities have filed a formal request with Interpol to issue a Blue Notice concerning former Minister Basil Rajapaksa, according to reports from September 19, 2026. The Minister of Public Security, Ananda Wijepala, confirmed that the request has been submitted. Interpol has responded by requesting further information from Sri Lankan officials, who are now preparing the necessary documentation to support the application.

Rajapaksa is the subject of two active arrest warrants. The first relates to the acquisition of a 1.5-acre property in Brown's Hill, Matara, which authorities allege was purchased using illicitly obtained funds. The second warrant concerns the distribution of 12,000 T-shirts during the Uva Provincial Council election campaign, reportedly financed with Rs. 7.8 million drawn from the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau.

According to a senior police officer cited in reports, the Interpol process remains ongoing, with Sri Lankan authorities working to compile and submit the supporting documents requested by the international police organization. Rajapaksa is currently not in Sri Lanka, though sources differ slightly on whether he has "fled" the country or is simply "currently not in the country."
