Abhishek Porel, a cricketer who represents Bengal in domestic cricket and plays for Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, was arrested by West Bengal police in Hooghly district in connection with a rape case. According to PTI, the arrest followed a directive from the Calcutta High Court, and Porel has been remanded into three days of police custody.
The case originated at Mogra Police Station following a complaint filed by a woman who alleged that Porel established an intimate relationship with her under the promise of marriage. Beyond the rape allegation, Porel also faces charges related to criminal intimidation and other offences. It should be noted that these allegations remain unproven in court and the investigation is ongoing.
The Calcutta High Court had issued directions on July 14 instructing police to pursue the arrest of Porel and another accused party, as well as to secure electronic devices relevant to the investigation. The 23-year-old cricketer's arrest marks a significant development in the case as authorities continue their inquiry into the matter.
