Sri Lanka's Foreign Ministry has confirmed that approximately 20 Iranian fuel tankers are anchored beyond the nation's Exclusive Economic Zone, stating the government bears no legal responsibility for the vessels while maintaining close surveillance.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed reports of Iranian fuel tankers operating in maritime waters near Sri Lanka. According to Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Thushara Rodrigo, around 20 vessels are currently anchored outside Sri Lanka's Exclusive Economic Zone.

Rodrigro clarified that the positioning of these tankers outside the EEZ means Sri Lanka has neither legal obligations nor responsibility regarding their presence. The distinction is significant under international maritime law, as activities within a nation's EEZ fall under different regulatory frameworks compared to international waters.

Despite the lack of formal responsibility, the Sri Lankan government has indicated it is actively monitoring developments related to the vessels. The Foreign Ministry's statement suggests authorities are taking note of the situation even though the tankers remain beyond territorial jurisdiction.
