Israel and Lebanon have signed a preliminary agreement following days of talks in Washington aimed at ending the conflict between Israel and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah group.

However, both sides see the agreement as a preliminary step.

Lebanese Ambassador Nada Moawad and Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter signed the trilateral document at the State Department in Washington, with the US, but few details have been released.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the agreement would allow Israeli forces to continue occupying southern Lebanon if Hezbollah fails to hand over its weapons.

“Today we have taken the first step on a difficult journey, there is no doubt about it. But it is an important, necessary and necessary step,” US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said before the signing of the agreement.

He later said in a statement that the US would facilitate the implementation of the agreement through the “Military Coordination Group for Lebanon” and that Washington would provide significant resources, including $100 million in immediate humanitarian assistance, in collaboration with the UN.

Rubio added that the US had reaffirmed its commitment to improving the capabilities of the Lebanese Armed Forces “to more effectively enforce sovereignty throughout Lebanese territory,” with more than $30 million under existing US jurisdictions and funding allocations.

The conflict between the two sides erupted on March 2 after the armed group Hezbollah attacked Israel, days after the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran.

Hezbollah’s attacks have prompted Israeli air and ground strikes. The attacks have killed more than 4,000 people in Lebanon and displaced more than a million.

Lebanese Ambassador Mowat also called it a “first step” on the path to restoring Lebanese sovereignty.

“Iran is out, Hezbollah is out, and the path to peace between Israel and Lebanon is now open,” said Israeli Ambassador Leiter.
