Jackie, a California bald eagle who gained widespread online following through a livestreamed nest camera, has died after weeks of intensive veterinary care at a wildlife rehabilitation center.
Jackie, a bald eagle residing in California's Big Bear Valley, passed away on Monday following an extended period of medical treatment at the Ojai Raptor Center. The bird had been receiving care after suffering injuries from an attack by other eagles, and veterinary staff identified underlying health conditions including anaemia and weight loss that complicated her recovery.
The Ojai Raptor Center reported that Jackie's health declined progressively despite comprehensive treatment efforts involving their veterinary team and specialist consultants. In a statement, the organization expressed profound sadness over the outcome, acknowledging the extraordinary nature of providing care for the renowned eagle.
Jackie gained recognition through the Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam, a livestream operated by the nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley that attracted hundreds of thousands of subscribers worldwide. The bird, who hatched in spring 2012, had been a frequent presence in the Big Bear Valley area and had maintained a long-term partnership with another eagle named Shadow since 2018, with whom she shared the famous nest.
The Ojai Raptor Center stated it is coordinating with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and California Department of Fish and Wildlife regarding Jackie's case. Jackie's remains have been transferred to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and officials indicated they would release additional information about her treatments and test results in a forthcoming comprehensive statement.
