Uncapped all-rounder Saransh Jain has earned a maiden Test call-up to India's squad for the upcoming two-match series in Sri Lanka in August, following an injury to Washington Sundar.
India's selection committee has named 33-year-old Saransh Jain to the squad for the two-Test series in Sri Lanka beginning August 15, marking the offspin all-rounder's first call-up at international level. The selection comes after Washington Sundar sustained a hamstring injury that has ruled him out of the first Test. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja makes his return to the squad following rest from the one-off Test against Afghanistan in June.
Jain has built a strong case for selection through consistent domestic performances. Across 54 first-class matches, he has taken 188 wickets at an average of 27.3 while also contributing 2,223 runs as a left-handed batter. His performances in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season proved particularly impressive, with 30 wickets at 20.43 and 518 runs at 57.55. He recently featured in India 'A' matches against Sri Lanka, recording seven wickets and an unbeaten 70 in the second game.
Jasprit Bumrah returns to lead the pace attack, though both he and batter Sai Sudharsan have been selected subject to fitness clearances. Bumrah suffered a knee injury during India's recent England tour, while Sudharsan's exact injury status remains unclear following his retirement hurt in an unofficial Test last month. Notably absent from the squad is Nitish Kumar Reddy, who is currently undergoing rehabilitation.
The 15-member squad maintains a familiar composition with Shubman Gill as captain and KL Rahul as vice-captain. Spinner Manav Suthar, who took seven wickets on Test debut against Afghanistan, has been retained and could compete with Jain and Kuldeep Yadav should India employ three spinners. The series, India's first Test tour of Sri Lanka in nine years, will see Galle host the first Test from August 15, followed by the second Test in Colombo from August 23.
