John Keells Holdings leadership expressed confidence in Sri Lanka's economic trajectory, citing improved macroeconomic stability and IMF-backed reforms while acknowledging near-term challenges from Middle East tensions.

John Keells Holdings PLC Chairperson Krishan Balendra outlined a generally optimistic picture of the conglomerate's performance and Sri Lanka's broader economic prospects during the company's first quarter review. Balendra pointed to strengthening macroeconomic fundamentals, resilient domestic demand, and continued implementation of the International Monetary Fund's reform program as factors supporting business and consumer confidence across multiple sectors.

While acknowledging operational pressures including elevated energy costs, logistics disruptions, and reduced regional travel linked to the Middle East conflict, Balendra characterized these impacts as manageable for the Group overall. The Transportation division demonstrated particular resilience, with Lanka Marine Services capitalizing on higher bunkering demand stemming from global shipping route disruptions. The Colombo West International Terminal has reached full utilization of its first-phase capacity ahead of schedule, with planned completion of full development targeted for December 2026.

The company announced significant expansion initiatives across its consumer-facing businesses. JKH entered Sri Lanka's organized quick service restaurant market through a Wendy's franchise arrangement, with the first outlet expected by December. The Supermarket business expanded its Keells network to 150 outlets during the quarter, supported by improved product availability and customer spending. In the automotive sector, demand for new energy vehicles has stabilized after last year's pent-up demand spike, with customers increasingly selecting mid-priced electric vehicles. The Group maintained an order pipeline exceeding 2,200 vehicles while expanding charging infrastructure nationwide.

In hospitality and leisure, the City of Dreams integrated resort continued operational ramp-up, with the Cinnamon Life hotel gaining market acceptance and supporting conference business. The associated casino recorded progressively stronger performance. Within property development, residential projects including VIMAN, TRI-ZEN, and the newly launched Vauxhall DSTRCT showed positive sales momentum. Financial Services benefitted from Nations Trust Bank's integration of HSBC Sri Lanka's retail banking operations and Union Assurance's premium income growth.
