Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara visited Anuradhapura Prison to assess conditions and inaugurate a new inter-agency emergency coordination mechanism, with plans to replicate the system nationwide.

Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara conducted an inspection of the Anuradhapura Prison on Wednesday, touring multiple sections of the facility to evaluate inmate conditions and institutional requirements. The minister visited the women's section, kitchen facilities, and areas designated for remand suspects, and subsequently engaged with inmates at the open prison camp.

The visit marked the establishment of a new joint emergency response mechanism at the prison, designed to enhance coordination between various state agencies during critical situations and improve overall inmate welfare. The framework brings together the Department of Prisons, Police, armed forces, health authorities, and other relevant government institutions under a unified response structure.

According to the Justice Ministry, the government intends to roll out similar emergency coordination mechanisms across Sri Lanka's prison system. The initiative reflects efforts to standardise crisis management protocols and inter-agency cooperation at correctional facilities nationwide. Senior officials from the Anuradhapura District administration and representatives from multiple state agencies participated in the establishment programme.
