Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara told Parliament today (21) that steps are underway to expedite the repeal of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA). He highlighted that the new legislation has already been approved by the Cabinet‑appointed committee, marking a decisive move toward abolishing the decades‑old law. “Once approval is granted for the new legislation, the Prevention of Terrorism Act will be abolished,” the Minister affirmed. Nanayakkara further explained that individuals detained under the PTA for extended periods without hearings will be able to apply for bail through the relevant High Court. He clarified that bail is not a government policy decision, stressing that the judiciary functions independently in such matters. (Newswire)
