Sri Lanka's Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna hosted senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) officials this week, with discussions centring on political development, economic stabilisation, and workers' welfare.
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) convened a high-level meeting on Monday with prominent figures from India's Communist Party of India (Marxist), marking an engagement between the two leftist political movements. JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva received CPI(M) delegates Prakash Karat and Brinda Karat at party headquarters, with JVP Politburo member and Minister Bimal Ratnayake participating in the discussions.
Prakash Karat brings considerable experience in communist leadership, having served as CPI(M) General Secretary from 2005 to 2015 before assuming an interim coordination role following the death of Sitaram Yechury in April 2025. His counterpart, Brinda Karat, holds the distinction of being the first woman appointed to the CPI(M) Politburo and previously led the All India Democratic Women's Association.
The bilateral talks addressed several areas of mutual interest, including the JVP and National People's Power's recent political ascendancy in Sri Lanka, government efforts to stabilise the national economy, and welfare programmes benefiting the public. Particular emphasis was placed on state intervention in wage improvements for plantation workers and broader initiatives to strengthen democratic governance through anti-corruption measures and the dismantling of privilege-based political structures.
The meeting underscores continuing diplomatic and ideological coordination between leftist movements in South Asia during a period of significant political transition in Sri Lanka.
