A driver of the Kundasala Pradeshiya Sabha has been arrested on charges of arranging transport and accommodation for the main suspect in the case related to the death of a Theldeniya physiotherapist, the police said. The officer-in-charge of the Kundasala Police Training College has also been arrested on the same charge. He is the former officer-in-charge of the Menikhinna Police Station and is the twin brother of a senior police officer.
The suspect has given several details in his statement regarding how the police officer in question acted to cover up the death and help the main suspect.
In it, he stated that after the incident, he had been staying in hiding at the house of the Kundasala Pradeshiya Sabha driver and that contact was established with the police officer through the driver.
The suspect also stated in his statement that the police officer who came to the driver’s house and reassured him by saying, “My brother is a senior police officer; do not be afraid of anything.”
Meanwhile, investigations have revealed that the main suspect had defrauded the arrested driver's wife of Rs. 500,000 by promising to send her abroad for work. In addition, investigations have revealed that on the day the main suspect fled to Jaffna, the driver's son had given him a mobile phone and a SIM card worth Rs. 50,000.
The arrested main suspect, his wife and the driver of the Kundasala Pradeshiya Sabha are being interrogated under a remand order.
Along with them, a team including the Officer-in-Charge of the Kundasala Police Training College will be produced before the Nuwara Eliya Magistrate's Court today.
