Former Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapaksa is also reportedly in trouble over the incident of receiving a bribe of 120 million rupees from the wife of underworld leader Harak Gatta alias Nandu Chinthaka. According to the information received so far, the large sum of money was not received from Harak Gatta's wife Madushika Madhuwandi in a bank account or in Sri Lankan rupees. Instead, the large sum of money was received from her in dirhams, the currency of the United Arab Emirates, where Madhuwandi resides. The transaction was coordinated by Nirmala Bandara alias 'Herbie', who lives in Dubai. The three suspects in the incident, namely attorney-at-law Rahitha Rajapaksa, Charith Abeysinghe and Varuna Hendrike, traveled to Dubai on March 23, 2023. There, they met and negotiated with 'Harak Gatta's' wife Madushika Madhuwanthi and Mithikama Ruwan, who is currently in custody, at Herbie's house. During that time, the suspects initially demanded a bribe of Rs. 500 million. This was later reduced to Rs. 300 million through negotiations and finally to Rs. 200 million. Of that amount, Rs. 12 crore was demanded as an advance payment. Accordingly, the investigation revealed that this amount was paid in dirhams as Rs. 10 crore on the first day and Rs. 2 crore the next day. The main purpose of receiving this bribe was to prevent Harak Gatta from being killed while in police custody, to lift the detention orders imposed on him, to transfer him from the Poosa High Security Prison to another prison and to make necessary arrangements for his release from interrogation. The Bribery Commission has told the court that the third suspect, Aruna Varuna Hendrik, used the 'penny money' method to bring back Rs 12 crore received in Dubai to the country. All three suspects returned to Sri Lanka on the same flight on March 29, 2023. As it has been reported that former Justice Minister and Rakitha Rajapaksa's father, Wijeyadasa Rajapaksa, also participated in the trip, the Assistant Director General of the Commission for the Prevention of Bribery and Corruption and Fraud, Anusha Sambandhapperuma, has stated that further investigations will be conducted into the matter.
