A seven-year-old girl and her 15-year-old brother drowned after their canoe overturned in a lagoon in Kalpitiya while they were out with their father to retrieve fishing nets.
A tragic incident in the Kurakkanhena area of Kalpitiya has claimed the lives of two siblings who drowned when their canoe capsized in a lagoon. The victims, identified as a seven-year-old girl and her 15-year-old brother, were traveling with their father at the time of the accident.
According to authorities, the three were on a routine fishing expedition to collect nets when the canoe overturned. The children's father was rescued from the water and transferred to Puttalam Hospital, where he was admitted in critical condition after nearly drowning. Emergency responders managed to pull him from the lagoon, though his condition remained serious at the time of reporting.
In a separate incident, a 52-year-old man from Kokuvil drowned while bathing in the sea near the Sati coastal area in Velanai, Kayts. Police identified the deceased as a resident of the area, marking another water-related fatality in the period.
