A new tourism initiative has opened kayak rides on the Elahera Yodha Canal in Polonnaruwa, allowing visitors to explore the scenic waterway while supporting local economic development.

A pilot tourism project has commenced operations on the Elahera Yodha Canal in Polonnaruwa, introducing kayaking as a recreational activity for both domestic and international visitors. The initiative aims to highlight the natural attractions of the region while providing a novel way for tourists to experience the historic waterway.

The project operates along a section of the canal extending from Bakamuna to Kottapitiya, encompassing the area up to the water distribution point. According to M.L.M. Dodangoda, Vice Chairman of the Elahara Pradeshiya Sabha, the canal's tranquil conditions make it suitable for safely conducting kayak operations throughout this stretch.

The venture was developed through collaboration between the Elahara Divisional Secretariat, the Elahara Pradeshiya Sabha, and tourism promotion agencies. Beyond its tourism value, the project is intended to stimulate economic activity in the rural area by generating employment opportunities for local residents through both direct and indirect means. The initiative reflects a broader strategy to develop the tourism sector in the Polonnaruwa district and capitalize on the region's natural landscape assets.
