The Indian Navy's Shardul-class Landing Ship Tank (LST) 'INS Airavat' will arrive in Colombo on June 1. The ship will be berthed in Colombo from June 1 to 4 and will undertake operational turnaround operations by loading fuel and essential supplies. The ship is also carrying key spare parts from the Indian Coast Guard for the Sri Lankan Coast Guard Ship 'Suraksha' under a donation from the Government of India. During the stay of the 650-ton relief ship, the ship's Commanding Officer, Commander I.P. Patil, will meet the Commander, Western Naval Area and the naval personnel will engage in professional and sports-related activities with the Sri Lankan Navy. In addition, the Indian and Sri Lankan navies will also participate in a beach clean-up event in Colombo in support of the Clean Sri Lanka initiative. During the ‘Tithwa’ cyclone in December 2025, the same type of ship, INS Gharial, arrived in Sri Lanka with 650 tonnes of relief food items and later, in February 2026, it also brought 10 palisade bridges to reconstruct the bridges damaged by the cyclone. The Indian Prime Minister’s policy is that the visits of Indian naval ships to Sri Lanka are aimed at further strengthening the strong ties between the navies of the two friendly countries. It is noteworthy that this is said to be in line with India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and the Indian Prime Minister’s vision of ‘MAHASAGAR for mutual and comprehensive progress in the security and development of the regions’.
