The Colombo High Court has released former minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena on bail after formally charging him in connection with allegations of accepting a bribe, according to the anti-corruption commission.
The Colombo High Court on Friday granted bail to former minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena following the presentation of an indictment in a corruption case against him. The charges were filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), which had initiated legal proceedings against the former official in July.
Abeywardena faces allegations that he accepted a bribe totaling Rs. 1 million from a businessman. According to CIABOC, the former minister allegedly accepted the payment in exchange for facilitating matters related to the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka. The case marks a significant development in the anti-corruption body's ongoing investigations into alleged misconduct by government officials.
