According to Nanayakkara, Wijenayake did raise objections to the proposal during internal party discussions and submitted his written views on the matter.

Nanayakkara clarified that Wijenayake was present at the relevant meeting and was not prevented from voicing his opposition, countering suggestions that the lawyer had been asked to remain silent. The Justice Minister acknowledged that differing opinions are a natural part of democratic deliberations, but emphasized that the Government ultimately reached a collective decision after thorough discussions.

The Minister rejected suggestions of a deeper split within the NPP over the judicial retirement proposal. He stated that the party operates according to its policy framework and that the Government has achieved consensus to proceed with the constitutional amendment. Nanayakkara framed the proposal as part of broader efforts to expedite court case disposal, reduce judicial backlogs, and enhance public confidence in the judiciary system.
