Samagi Jana Balasaheb MP Mujibur Rahman has said that some key figures who systematically covered up key evidence and intelligence information related to the brutal murder of famous rugby player Wasim Thajudeen have been appointed as senior advisors to the current government. He questioned how the government can find the real killers by keeping old friends who were part of the Rajapaksa shadow government and who closed the murder cases as advisors. He made this statement while participating in the second day of the adjournment motion on the ‘Destruction of Narcotics and Prevention of Organized Crime’ held in Parliament on Friday. He further stated, "The President, during his special address to Parliament, mentioned the murders and abductions of Lasantha Wickremesinghe, Wasim Thajudeen and Prageeth Ekneligoda. We, as the opposition party, have never opposed the new government taking legal action against the political and security elements involved in these matters. Because, the cases that were initiated during our good governance government are still pending in the courts today. Question to the President, but the President alleges in the House that the opposition parties are the obstacle to pursuing these cases. The President should openly tell the country who is obstructing these murder investigations. Why are you hiding it? Those who oppose the appointments of former intelligence officers Shani Abeysekera and Ravi Seneviratne are your old political Friends? Is that why the President is keeping quiet without saying who they are?
Those who had very close dealings with the Rajapaksas in the Thajudeen murder case and diverted the case are now sitting as advisors in every important department of your government. Even if the President has good intentions to get justice in these cases, he cannot do so by having such advisors. We are certain that these political assassinations should not be covered up again. Who prevented it?
Meanwhile, as the opposition party, we have been continuously urging the immediate filling of the long-standing vacancies of judges in the Supreme Court and High Courts of the country. The Speaker and the President should jointly make moral appointments for this purpose.
Failure to do so could result in a major paralysis in the country's entire judicial system and its independence.
In addition, the government In parallel with the ongoing drug eradication activities, rehabilitation programs for affected youth should also be strengthened. The main rehabilitation center for men under 35 years of age in the Thalangama area of Colombo has now been closed. Due to this, poor parents from the Colombo district have been forced to take their children to distant areas such as Kandy. Therefore, the Ministry of Public Security should take steps to immediately reopen the Thalangama Rehabilitation Center for the benefit of the youth of the Colombo district, he said.
