The National Building Research Organisation has issued multiple levels of landslide warnings across four districts in Sri Lanka's central highlands, with the highest alert level calling for evacuations in parts of Kandy District.
The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has activated a tiered landslide warning system for vulnerable areas across Kandy, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura districts, citing continued heavy rainfall as the primary concern. The alerts took effect on August 3rd and remain valid until 9.00 am on August 4th.
The most severe alert, a Level 3 (Red) evacuation warning, has been issued for Pasbage Korale and Ganga Ihala Korale Divisional Secretariat divisions in Kandy District. This highest warning level indicates imminent risk and calls for residents to leave affected areas immediately.
A Level 2 (Amber) "Be Alert" warning covers a wider range of locations, including Ududumbara and Udapalatha in Kandy; Yatiyantota and Aranayake in Kegalle; Ambagamuwa, Norwood, Nuwara Eliya, Kotmale East and Kotmale West in Nuwara Eliya; and Opanayake, Imbulpe and Ratnapura in Ratnapura District. Residents in these areas are advised to remain prepared for potential evacuation.
A Level 1 (Yellow) "Be Aware" warning has been extended to Panvila and Medadumbara in Kandy, Deraniyagala and Dehiowita in Kegalle, and Nivithigala and Kuruwita in Ratnapura. The NBRO has urged all residents in affected zones to monitor local authority instructions closely and exercise caution, particularly in areas experiencing ongoing heavy rainfall.
