The Mihintale area has been declared a vegetarian zone from tomorrow (29), the full moon day of Poson.

The Anuradhapura State Poson Committee has taken this step at the request of Dr. Ananda Mahinkanda, founder of the American Social Environment Foundation, as the Mihintale area is the world's first animal sanctuary.

The Anuradhapura State Poson Committee is chaired by the Anuradhapura District Administrator. The Chief Incumbent of Mihintale, Venerable Walawahangunawewe Dhammarathana Thero, and the Chief Incumbent of Ruwanwelise, Venerable Etela Paraduwewewe Gnanarathana Thero, have also given their approval and full support for this work.

The relevant step to designate the Mihintale sacred site and the surrounding area as a vegetarian zone has been taken to preserve its historical and religious value as a place where Buddhism originated and to maintain an environment free from animal cruelty.

This is how Ananda Mahinkanda, who visited Mihintale and its surrounding areas since Poson, expressed the value of the vegetarianism process.

Dr. Ananda Mahinkanda, Founder of the Social Environment Foundation

Mihintale is a sacred place considered to be the first wildlife sanctuary in the world where kings took steps to protect animals since the Anuradhapura era.

It is essential for people to be vegetarian.

Man is a herbivore. Not a carnivore or an omnivore. If this situation is understood well, people can lead a healthy life. If this message is spread among the people by spreading it in every royal temple in Sri Lanka, we can make the people of Sri Lanka a healthy people. This concept was strongly influenced in my mind by seeing the Sithulpawwa sacred ground declared as a vegetarian land.

“Sabba Danang Dhamma Danang Jinathe”

My idea is to teach the entire human race in Sri Lanka with compassion that the Dhamma means being vegetarian first and foremost, keeping the Buddha’s words in mind.

People should turn to vegetarianism because we are a group of herbivores. The human body is designed to eat, digest and survive plant foods.

The teeth in the human mouth are designed to grind all food. Not to tear it.

The digestion of food in the digestive system begins in the mouth. From there, various enzymes are added and the nutrients in the food are absorbed into the body.

The small intestine and the large intestine are very long. This is to facilitate the process of absorbing the quality of the food taken into the body.

The process of digestion of a carnivore is rapid. They swallow the food they tear. The intestines of the digestive system are very short. Carnivorous animals eat by grabbing their prey.

If we understand this difference properly, we can maintain our existence in a healthy and safe way. In short, we can live without getting sick.

The District Secretary and the District Attorney

Being vegetarian is a good way to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The best way to tell people about this situation is the Poson Full Moon Poya Day. Because just as the day Buddhism was first brought to Sri Lanka, the day that showed the way to eliminate animal cruelty is the Vesak Full Moon Poya Day.

If a person is to create the background for leading a good, normal and simple life, his diet is very helpful. I request that we start it from the sacred ground of Mihintale.
