A prison officer attached to Colombo Magazine Prison has been remanded in custody for further questioning following his arrest on suspicion of supplying narcotics to an inmate.
A prison guard employed at Colombo Magazine Prison was arrested and subsequently remanded in custody after being produced before the Mount Lavinia Magistrate's Court on suspicion of involvement in drug trafficking operations within the facility.
According to police authorities, the investigation began when the Mount Lavinia Divisional Crimes Investigation Unit apprehended an individual suspected of supplying drugs to the prison officer. During interrogation, this suspect allegedly revealed details about a narcotics supply chain, claiming the substances were being transferred to the prison guard. Police investigations corroborated this information, prompting officers to conduct a targeted operation in the Borella area.
Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wootler indicated that the officer was apprehended while allegedly attempting to collect narcotics from the suspect. Preliminary findings suggest the prison staff member was facilitating the supply of drugs to a narcotics trafficker currently detained within Colombo Magazine Prison.
The court has authorized detention orders allowing authorities to conduct further questioning of the suspect. The case highlights concerns regarding contraband smuggling within Sri Lanka's prison system and potential security vulnerabilities.
